Vancouver with Kids: A Family Guide

The best of family Vancouver — Stanley Park, the aquarium, Science World, Capilano and Grouse Mountain, Granville Island's Kids Market, and how to plan a trip that works for all ages.

Vancouver is a wonderful city for families — safe, walkable, full of nature and hands-on attractions, and easy to get around without a car for much of the time. The blend of outdoors and kid-friendly sights keeps all ages happy. Here's how to plan a family trip.

Stanley Park. The natural centerpiece of a family trip. Rent bikes (including kid sizes, trailers, and tandems) and cycle the flat, scenic, traffic-free seawall; see the totem poles; ride the seasonal miniature train; splash at Second or Third Beach; and visit the Vancouver Aquarium within the park — a top family attraction with sea otters, jellyfish, and a rainforest gallery. The park alone can fill a day.

Science World and hands-on fun. Science World, in its landmark geodesic dome, is a hands-on wonderland of interactive exhibits, live science demonstrations, and an OMNIMAX dome theater — one of the best kid attractions in the city and a great rainy-day option. FlyOver Canada at Canada Place is a quick, thrilling flight-simulation ride (mind the height requirement) that kids love, and another all-weather pick.

The North Shore adventures. The Capilano Suspension Bridge is a thrill for kids — the swaying bridge, the treetop canopy walks, and the cliff walk — with a free shuttle from downtown. Grouse Mountain adds a gondola ride and, in summer, lumberjack shows and grizzly bears, or winter snow play. Both make exciting North Shore outings for families.

Granville Island. A fun, easy family stop: get there by the little False Creek ferry (an adventure in itself), graze the Public Market, explore the artisan studios, and let younger kids loose in the indoor Kids Market full of toy shops and play areas. The waterfront and water-park (in summer) add to the appeal.

Pacing and logistics. Vancouver is compact and transit-friendly (the SkyTrain, buses, SeaBus, and mini-ferries are all fun for kids), so you often won't need a car in the city — though one helps for the North Shore and day trips. Stay central to allow hotel breaks, build in plenty of outdoor and beach time, and pack layers and rain gear. Don't over-schedule — the parks, beaches, and seawall are half the fun and mostly free.

Food with kids. Easy and great — Vancouver's casual seafood spots, the Granville Island market, abundant and affordable Asian food (kids love dim sum and sushi), and food trucks make family eating a pleasure. The diversity means there's something for every palate.
